Robert David Nagy, Metropolitan Opera  tenor soloist: 1957-1988.  Born: 3/3/29
He is now in retirement and living in North Ridgeville, Ohio

Robert discovered his singing voice at the age of 19 while singing with Mario Lanza
recordings. He served in the Korean war on the front lines for 11 months.
He attended Cleveland Institute of Music and in his third year he entered the Metropolitan
Opera Guild Auditions of the Air in 1955.  He won several scholarships
(Rockefeller, Weyerhauser, Ford etc.) and was asked by the Metropolitan Opera
to come to New York to study.  With almost no background in Opera,
Robert became the first and last apprentice to learn his trade on the stage of the Met.
He made his debut as Giuseppe in Traviata.

After ten years of study and secondary roles he was given a leading role contract.
He gradually became a house singer and a valuable first cover for all the famous
heavy tenors of the time which is called the "Golden Age of Opera."  Robert could
be counted on to fill in for lead roles in Russian, Italian, French, German, English.
Robert's repertoire consisted of over 70 operas and over 100 roles which were
performed at the Met, in Europe, Asia, South America, Canada and the U.S.

He is married to Vincenza Ianni Nagy. and they have three children, Robert, Helena and Gina.
Upon returning to their home town in 1987 Robert chose to rest and recuperate.
During the 19 years he's lived in Ohio he has done master classes, taught young
aspiring tenors and served on judging panels at various colleges.  Poor health
has kept him from continuing serving in the world of music, however, music is a vital part
of family life.

Robert has been great inspiration to aspiring singers because with almost no background in
opera he sustained a 31 year career at the Metropolitan Opera.  He truly lived the American dream.
